Two people that one wouldn't expect to work together are clicker
Radboud Mens and voice generator Jaap Blonk. Normally their styles
are way apart. But the result is in fierce contrast with this
expectation: voice samples are used to make a very Mens-like type of
techno, with all the funk, but also sounding pretty odd and funny
sometimes. Now this is a combination that works excellently because
of these different techniques. The CD offers five tracks, that are
quite different, but stay coherent. A very successful collaboration.
Vital Weekly
Micro-minimal-techno artist Radboud Mens joins up with vocal artist Jaap Blonk
for their release, titled Bek. As this word is Dutch for 'mouth,' it seems only natural
that all the sound sources used in these recordings derived from Jaap Blonk's voice.
Blonk mimics techno rhythms and sounds with astounding accuracy. I can only assume
that Mens, with his admirable ability to create meticulously structured rhythms,
then structured the sound sources into the tracks presented here. The result is
a wonderfully upbeat handful of light, mechanical yet organic sounding techno tunes
(exploring techno, drum'n'bass, minimal techno and gabber rhythms),
with a host of strange, quirky sounds filling in all the details.
The disc is short (presenting five tracks in under 25 minutes) but it's a strong,
distinctive release. You've likely never heard anything quite like this before.
Incursion
Tanzmusik auf Staalplaat ist ja eher selten. Hier aber Blonk (der
schon einiges auf Staalplaat releast hat) und Mens (mit zusätzlichen
Releases auf Audio.NL) mit genau soetwas, konstruiert aus
Mundgeräuschen. Zunächst beginnen wir mit einem rabiat dekonstruiert
klackernden Technotrack für alle die es lieben wenn Sounds nicht so
fleischig klingen, sondern wie Glasknochen auf dem Weg zur clonkigen
Noodlesuppe, dann eine Art Mouthorgan-Pupskissen-Drumandbass Nummer
für Freunde des kubistisch strengen Grooves ohne Rundungen, ein
oldschoolig housiger Hundegrunztrack mit bleepigen Anklängen, ein
Stückchen Quietscheentchenhymne und etwas für die strukturalistische
Gabba Fraktion, die sich, das wissen wir schon, hierfür erst erfinden
müsste. Unterhaltsam, wenn man nicht Angst bekommt, dass einen die
vielen Mundsources irgendwann anspucken.
BUG Review
Doch ganz kann sich Mens bei Blonks hochvirtuosen Lippen-
und Gaumen-Installationen nicht rausgehalten haben.
Nicht etwa, weil Blonks Lautpoesie mal wieder die Grenzen
des machbaren sprengt. Da lässt er Tonperlen über- und durcheinanderkullern,
beschleunigt sie; zwischendurch grunzt und schnalzt Blonk,
während ein metronomischer Dauertakt für Trip-Hop-Ambiente sorgt.
Gerade dieser Tribut an die Club-Szene wirkt aber als Grundton
so authentisch, ist so mit dem Synthesizer in die kunstvolle Vertikale gebracht,
dass Blonks Energien durchaus elektronisch kanalisiert sein müssen.
Wofür sich Blonk angesichts dieser verblüffender Unterhaltung
jedoch nicht zu schämen braucht.
